African Americans throughout Oregon got caught up in the energy and promise of the civil rights movement. Black community organizations pushed to build economic wealth through homeownership and business development. Blacks began to organize in their own communities. Black students agitated for Black studies programs and Black student unions at colleges and universities across the state.
